Three Essays on Sexuality, Beyond Pleasure, The Ego and the Id

Three key works by Sigmund Freud, published in the early 20th century, were foundational to his evolving views and had a profound impact on global society. In the uncompromising "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality" (1905), Freud asserted that 'sexual aberrations' were not exclusive to the insane but also existed in 'normal' individuals to varying degrees. These essays focused on sexual perversions, childhood sexuality, and puberty. While 21st-century society has further explored and expanded on this topic, revisiting Freud's early discussions remains enlightening. "The Ego and the Id" (1923) outlined Freud's examination of the human psyche, developed through years of psychoanalytic practice. By exploring the conscious and unconscious mind, Freud introduced three elements of the psychic apparatus: the id (instinctual drives), the superego (moralizing function), and the ego (conscious mediator between the id and superego). These works not only offer valuable insights but also demonstrate the progression of Freud's ideas over two decades.
